2009: How it all started
Unlike most stores, Titan Hobby Shop did not start out with a primary intention of earning money. Titan’s founder; Filipino Pro Magic Player: JT Porter, together with his team and close friends, needed a place to hold their regular booster drafts and practice sessions. An avenue to unload and liquidate extra cards that were acquired from events had a nice ring to it, but was not really the primary concern at that time. Titan Kapitolyo opened in June of 2009 just in time to host regular practice sessions for that year’s Nationals.
2010: Titan shifts it’s focus to “giving back” and community building.
The “JT Qualifiers” or JTQ; an independent tournament that had a primary goal of finding new local talent and pitting them abroad was introduced and became a great success. 2 players, namely Richard Badlon and Ranier Santiago, were awarded return tickets and accomodations to Grand Prix Kuala Lumpur for winning the JTQ: KL. The 3rd JTQ for the year awarded it’s winner; Glicerio Garcia, with a very healthy cardpool for the upcoming Grand Prix Manila.
The Titan Legacy Super Series or LSS, was introduced late 2010 with goals of reviving a once dead eternal format; Legacy. The goal of the project was to run a series of Legacy events so that people would consider investing on the format. The series was again very successful and the Legacy format is now flourishing in the country.
2011: We will continue “giving back” and building communities
Great news was delivered to us early this year in the form of an emailed letter from Wizards of the Coast. They say that we can now hold Grand Prix Trials! We plan on integrating these events with our JTQs so that in addition to our insane prize support, we can also award actual byes to the top finishers of our events.
As for community building, we will be focusing more on casual players this year. We have just launched our Commander / Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH) league and we plan to continue running these types of events throughout the year.
We are also working with some partners in order to expand our areas of operation.
