Weekend Review – 2/15/2011

February 16th, 2011

Pro Tour Paris:
Complete coverage from the mothership can be found here.

2 Filipino players went to Paris to compete. 2-time National team member Jason Ascalon was the man from Manila. The other Pinoy was Marcel Zafra; who now resides in Canada. The event did not go too well for us; Jason was off to a bad start with a 0-2-1 record and Marcel fell out of contention early. Jason was able to recover a bit by winning the next 4 rounds but fell short of making it to day 2 when he lost the last booster draft round to David Ochoa.

Grand Prix Paris:
Complete coverage from the mothership can be found here.

Again, we have the same players representing the country in this event. Jason Ascalon was off to a hot 6-0 start and got into a feature match with no less than one of the game’s greatest to ever play; Kai Budde (feature match link). Sadly, bad luck struck once again and Jason lost the rest of his matches for the day, missing out on day 2 by 1 win. As for Marcel Zafra, he opened a really bad sealed pool and was out of the tournament early.

Local News:
No major tournaments were held over the weekend; a wise move on the part of tournament organizers because tournament attendance tends to decline when nearing Valentines day. We did run 2 drafts last Friday though. The first draft saw 2 of the country’s loudest players; Morris Tan and Nick Ortega on top of the standings. The second was led by limited veteran Chester Sy and a person whom we thought could only play 60-card decks; Ben Solpico.

Deck on the spotlight:
UW Stoneforge Caw-Go
- Brian Kibler, Brad Nelson, Ben Stark, etc

4 Celestial Colonnade
4 Glacial Fortress
5 Island
1 Misty Rainforest
4 Plains
4 Seachrome Coast
4 Tectonic Edge
26 lands

4 Squadron Hawk
4 Stoneforge Mystic
8 creatures

4 Day of Judgment
1 Deprive
3 Gideon Jura
4 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
3 Mana Leak
4 Preordain
4 Spell Pierce
1 Stoic Rebuttal
1 Sword of Feast and Famine
1 Sylvok Lifestaff
26 other spells

Sideboard
2 Baneslayer Angel
2 Divine Offering
2 Flashfreeze
1 Negate
4 Oust
3 Ratchet Bomb
1 Sword of Body and Mind
15 sideboard cards

This decklist won Ben Stark the Pro Tour Paris trophy, and won Brad Nelson the 2010 POY trophy. I have not tried or even sleeved it myself but I guess it’s a good list.

FOILS will be available at the store starting Feb 9, 2011

February 7th, 2011

Yes, we do have an “MTG Foil Singles” category in our inventory, but the problem is; we never got the chance to update or even put price tags on our items there. We have been working on it for some time though, and it should be ready by tomorrow (Feb 9, 2011)

Click photo to enlarge

We will be having lots of Standard legal FOILS for sale this week (starting Wednesday). Grave Titans, Sun Titans, Goblin Guides, Stoneforge Mystics, Valakut deck pieces, Planeswalkers, etc. Stocks will be very limited because… because foils are always like that. They will be available for over the counter customers only. Online ordering will follow shortly after as it still needs a little more work.

Time to pimp those decks! Please tell your foil collector friends.

Booster drafts are back; and Rey Abella won the 1st Titan draft of the year.

February 4th, 2011

It’s been a while since we had a booster draft, but we were able to get 8 players for an FNM draft today.

Rey Abella won the whole thing on the back of 3 Leonin Skyhunters and 2 Galvanic Blasts. A Wurmcoil Engine (which he never really needed) was also a welcome addition to the crew.

We will be running another draft next week. Join us on Facebook and let us know if you wish to join. We plan to fill 2 simultaneous pods (16 players total).

JTQ Singapore – March 2011

January 19th, 2011

First things first, our event is now a real Grand Prix Trial complete with a K-level of 24 and will award 3 byes to top finishers. The number of byes awarded will be determined by the number of participants as per Grand Prix Trial regulations. Top 4 players will get byes if we have 64+ participants, and top 8 players will get byes if we have 128+ participants.

Yes we will still feature the insane prize pool that the local players have grown to love. For these 2 events, we will be giving Php 7,000 to the top finisher to help out with travel expenses (a ticket to SGP roughly costs that much). Oh and we will be giving it in cash; so whether you choose to go to the GP or not, that would be +7,000 in your pocket. For the consolation prizes; we have been known to give away +/-6 boxes worth of products in the past and we do not intend to change that. We reduced the entry fee too.

So get your 60-card decks ready and let’s get it on!

Basilio Brothers dominate the EDH/Commander tables

January 16th, 2011

9 players decided to try out their 100-card decks last Saturday and when the dust was all settled; the Basilio brothers came out on top. Charles and Joseph Basilio were on separate pods during the 1st round. They were both the last man standing and finished with the highest score of their respective tables earning them both a place in the same top table. They once again dominated the top table by executing a weird teamwork play of dividing the players they would eliminate in order to feed their scorecards.

Top generals:
Charles Basilio – Zur, the Enchanter
Joseph Basilio – Rafiq of the Many
Dominic YPK – Sharuum the Hedgemon
Yol Jamendang – Azami, Lady of Scrolls
Sherwin Bassig – Ezuri, Renegade Leader

Despite the relatively low attendance, the 5 players were able to walk away with more boosters than they were expecting (thanks to our sponsor) to cap off a fun 4-hours of card-slinging.

We will be amending the point-system for the next event so stay tuned for that.

Point system for this weekend’s EDH/Commander event

January 11th, 2011

Banned cards:

Ancestral Recall
Balance
Biorhythm
Black Lotus
Coalition Victory
Fastbond
Gifts Ungiven
Kokusho, the Evening Star
Karakas
Library of Alexandria
Limited Resources
Lion’s Eye Diamond
Tolarian Academy
Channel
Emrakul, the Aeons Torn *NEW*
Metalworker
Mox Sapphire, Ruby, Pearl, Emerald and Jet
Panoptic Mirror
Protean Hulk
Recurring Nightmare
Sway of the Stars
Time Vault
Time Walk
Tinker
Upheaval
Worldgorger Dragon
Yawgmoth’s Bargain
Painter’s Servant
Staff of Domination

Additionally the following legends should not be used as a Commander:
Braids, Cabal Minion
Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary

Point system: We have decided to keep this simple for easy recall. This would be our 1st event after all and we would not want any confusion while playing.

Negatives
-1 Chasm: Destroy all lands an opponent controls. This may be given more than once to any player (Destroy all lands of all three opponents = -3).
-1 Greedy Mcgreederson: Take an extra turn. This may be given more than once to any player.

Positives
+5
Straight Flush – Control five creatures of exactly the same color(s) in five consecutive powers. This will be awarded only when the stack is empty. This may only be awarded to an individual player once per pod, although it may be awarded to multiple players.

+3
Flush - Control five non-token creatures of EXACTLY the same color (five green creatures, or green and red creatures, but not three green and 2 green and red). This will be awarded only when the stack is empty. This may only be awarded to an individual player once per pod, although it may be awarded to multiple players.

+2
You’re outta here – Kill a player or being directly responsible for a player’s death. There is the obvious – controlling the source of the damage (whether it’s direct or creatures). This also includes, although is not limited to alternate methods, such as controlling the Howling Mine that makes the player deck himself, or redirecting lethal damage to someone. (Player A plays Fireball, Player B Swerves the Fireball to Player C.)
Bases Loaded – Control a Land, Creature, Enchantment, Artifact, and Planeswalker, while having both a Sorcery and an Instant present on the stack.
Busy, Busy, Busy (Titan original) – Play an extra land, play 2 permanents of different card types, cast an instant, cast a sorcery, activate a planeswalker all in one turn and attack with at least 3 creatures all in one turn.

+1
Look at Me – Last person standing in a pod.
Generalissimo - Kill a player with General damage.
Forth times the Charm – Resolve your General 4 times in a single game from the General Zone.
Straight - Control at least one creature of five consecutive powers (for example, Mogg Fanatic, Jackal Pup, Mogg Flunkies, Ravenous Baloth, Shivan Dragon). This will be awarded only when the stack is empty. This may only be awarded to an individual player once per pod, although it may be awarded to multiple players.
First Blood – First player to have a creature killed by an opponent. Kill includes destroy, exile, or cause a player to sacrifice the creature. Combat damage doesn’t count. (This can be awarded to multiple people if they all have creatures killed at the same time by the same effect – Wrath of God, Damnation, etc…)
Getting to Basics – Control at least 7 Basic Lands. This can be earned by each player in each pod.
I’m Probably Next – Have the lowest life total, which must be lower than 10 when the first player is killed.
Standard Rules (Titan original) – Play a deck composed solely of Standard-legal cards and win the game. (this is a nod to the fact that a lot of noobs may have only standard cards e)
Heeeere’s Timmy! (Titan original) – Win the game without any combo activation, without taking an extra turn, without countering any spell, and without stealing any permanent.
Kill the Bastard (Titan original) – Kill or destroy any of these notorious EDH permanents: Seedborn Muse, Dovescape, Zur the Enchanter, Uril the Miststalker, Azami Lady of Scrolls, Sorin Markov, Karmic Justice, Ulamog the Infinite Gyre, Isochron Scepter, Darksteel Colossus, Lightning Greaves, Grave Pact, Maze of Ith, Crucible of Worlds or a Mindslaver.

We will have printouts of this text ready on each table during the event.
